PTPK vs PTPTN: which education loan applies to you?

A clear, factual guide to Malaysia's two government education loans — PTPK for skills and TVET training, PTPTN for academic diploma and degree study — and how to know which one you should apply for.

In short

The loan follows the programme, not your preference. If you enrol in a skills or TVET programme (such as a DKM at a JPK-accredited skills college), you apply to PTPK. If you enrol in an academic diploma or degree at an MQA-accredited institution, you apply to PTPTN.

PTPK is the Skills Development Fund Corporation, under the Ministry of Human Resources. PTPTN is the National Higher Education Fund Corporation, under the Ministry of Higher Education. Both are repayable government education loans, not grants.

SG Academy is a JPK skills college, so its DKM and skills pathways are generally funded through PTPK — and some pathways add a monthly allowance subject to eligibility.

What is PTPK?

PTPK stands for Perbadanan Tabung Pembangunan Kemahiran — the Skills Development Fund Corporation. It is the government education loan body for skills and TVET training in Malaysia, operating under the Ministry of Human Resources. PTPK finances learners taking national skills qualifications such as the Malaysian Skills Certificate (SKM), the Diploma Kemahiran Malaysia (DKM) and the advanced diploma (DLKM) at accredited skills-training institutes — SG Academy among them. Depending on the programme, PTPK support can go towards training fees, and some skills pathways also include a monthly living allowance for eligible learners.

What is PTPTN?

PTPTN stands for Perbadanan Tabung Pendidikan Tinggi Nasional — the National Higher Education Fund Corporation. It is the government education loan body for academic higher education, operating under the Ministry of Higher Education. PTPTN finances students pursuing academic qualifications such as diplomas and bachelor's degrees at MQA-accredited public and private universities, colleges and polytechnics. Its coverage typically goes towards tuition, with living-cost support that can depend on the programme and household income, and PTPTN applications are usually tied to an active SSPN-i national education savings account.

The key idea: the loan follows the programme type

The single most useful thing to understand is that you do not simply "choose" between PTPK and PTPTN. The loan you apply for is determined by the kind of programme you enrol in. A skills qualification regulated by the Department of Skills Development (JPK) — like a DKM — routes you to PTPK. An academic qualification accredited by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA) — like an academic diploma or a degree — routes you to PTPTN. So the first question is not "which loan?" but "which kind of programme am I doing?" — and the right loan follows from that.

Ask us to check your funding options

Which one applies to you?

Start with your programme. If you are enrolling in a skills or TVET pathway — a DKM, an SKM, or a skills certificate at a JPK-accredited centre such as SG Academy — PTPK is the loan body you deal with. If you are enrolling in an academic diploma or degree at an MQA-accredited university or college, PTPTN is the loan body. A minority of institutions run both academic and skills programmes, in which case the same student could use PTPTN for an academic course or PTPK for a skills course, depending on what they sign up for.

Both are repayable loans, so treat either as a commitment: understand the repayment schedule before you sign, and check for any repayment discounts or exemptions announced from time to time on the official websites.

Can I switch or use both?

You generally apply to the body that matches your current programme. If you later change pathways — for example, completing a DKM funded by PTPK and then articulating into a bachelor's degree — a fresh application to the loan body that covers the new programme (PTPTN for the degree) would usually apply. You cannot use one loan to pay for a programme the other body is meant to fund. Because rules on concurrent or successive loans can change, confirm your specific situation with PTPK or PTPTN directly.

Funding at SG Academy

SG Academy is a JPK 5-star skills college, so its DKM and skills programmes are generally financed through PTPK rather than PTPTN. For working adults, the DKM-PRO pathway is structured around a PTPK education loan, and several SG Academy programmes also offer a monthly living allowance subject to eligibility — which can mean little or no out-of-pocket cost for eligible learners. Reskilling routes for retrenched or EIS-eligible workers may instead be funded through PERKESO or HRD Corp channels. The simplest way to see what you qualify for is a quick eligibility check with our counsellors.

The verdict

PTPK and PTPTN are not competing choices — they fund different kinds of study. Apply to PTPK if your programme is a skills or TVET qualification such as a DKM. Apply to PTPTN if your programme is an academic diploma or degree. Confirm the current amounts, interest and repayment terms on the official sites before you commit.

If you are heading into a skills pathway with SG Academy, PTPK is your route — and a free counselling session is the fastest way to confirm eligibility and any allowance you may qualify for.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between PTPK and PTPTN?

PTPK is the government education loan for skills and TVET training (SKM, DKM), under the Ministry of Human Resources. PTPTN is the government education loan for academic higher education (diplomas, degrees), under the Ministry of Higher Education. Which one you apply to depends on the type of programme you enrol in.

Can I use PTPTN for a skills or TVET course?

Generally no. Skills/TVET programmes such as a DKM at a JPK-accredited institute are funded through PTPK, while PTPTN funds academic programmes at MQA-accredited institutions. The loan follows the programme type. Confirm your specific programme's eligibility with the provider and the official loan body.

Which loan does SG Academy use?

SG Academy is a JPK-accredited skills college, so its DKM and skills programmes are generally financed through PTPK, and some pathways also offer a monthly living allowance subject to eligibility. Speak to SG Academy counsellors to check your PTPK eligibility.

Do PTPK and PTPTN have to be repaid?

Yes. Both are repayable government education loans, not grants, and repayment typically begins after you complete your studies. Confirm current repayment terms, rates and any discounts directly on ptpk.gov.my and ptptn.gov.my, as terms change over time.

Do I need an SSPN account for PTPK?

An active SSPN-i savings account is typically associated with PTPTN applications rather than PTPK. Requirements for both bodies can change, so verify the current eligibility conditions on the official websites before applying.

This guide describes PTPK and PTPTN in general, structural terms as of July 2026 and is not financial advice. Loan amounts, interest, eligibility, SSPN requirements and repayment terms are set by PTPK and PTPTN and change over time — always confirm current details on ptpk.gov.my, ptptn.gov.my, or with your institution before applying. SG Academy is the publisher and is a JPK-accredited skills provider whose programmes are generally PTPK-financed.
